North Cape

In the summer, you have the chance to see reindeer grazing on Magerøya and experience Sami culture with a visit to a Sami family in their Siida.

Join a king crab safari for an exciting experience where you can see, hold, and taste this delicacy. The trip takes place by RIB boat on the beautiful Sarnesfjord, where you will help inspect the crab pots and bring in the catch. Although king crab is a relatively new species in Norwegian waters, it has quickly become an important and profitable livelihood for local fishermen in the region.

In winter, there is convoy driving to the North Cape from the Skarsvåg intersection. For many, the final 13 kilometers to the North Cape in a convoy is an exciting journey along a snow-covered winter road.

Honningsvåg is a town with about 2,450 inhabitants and serves as the administrative center of Nordkapp Municipality. A stroll through the town might take you to the North Cape Museum and Honningsvåg Church, which dates back to 1885. Honningsvåg is well known for its vibrant cultural life and strong revue traditions. In June, the North Cape Festival takes place, and in September, the North Cape Film Festival is held. Honningsvåg is a lively town with many shops, restaurants, pubs, and cafés, and is also home to the world’s northernmost bakery and pastry shop, Honni Bakes.

The Gjesværstappan Nature Reserve is home to Norway’s largest seabird colony. The islands host a large puffin colony as well as the northernmost gannet colony in the country. You can also find guillemots, kittiwakes, cormorants, razorbills, fulmars, and storm petrels nesting at Gjesværstappan. The trip to the reserve is made by boat.

In Nordkapp Municipality, there are plenty of opportunities for both short and longer hikes. Kirkeporten is a rock formation west of Skarsvåg with spectacular views of the North Cape cliff and the North Cape Horn. Hornvika was once the starting point for tourists who wanted to visit the North Cape before the road was completed in 1956. Knivskjellodden, a peninsula northwest of the North Cape Plateau, is a longer hike of 18 km round trip. From Knivskjellodden, you have an impressive view of the North Cape cliff plunging into the sea.

Nordkapp Municipality is home to many fishing villages. How about a gallery visit to the idyllic Kamøyvær and a stroll along the harbor with its small, colorful fishing boats, or a stop at the Christmas House in Skarsvåg, the world’s northernmost fishing village? Gjesvær is another traditional fishing village, known not only for bird safaris to the Gjesværstappan but also as the only place name in all of Finnmark mentioned in the Viking Age, specifically in Snorre’s Kings’ Saga. The nature around Gjesvær is unique, with Europe’s northernmost birch forest and an archipelago of 99 islets and skerries.
